Local bakery know-how

If you're wandering through San José, make a point to check out "Panadería La Moderna" near the Mercado Central. It’s one of those old-school bakeries with a steady flow of locals grabbing traditional breads and occasional experimental pastries. Oh, and try the quesadilla (that’s a slightly sweet, cheesy flatbread) while it’s fresh out of the oven.

If you’re cruising rural Costa Rica, keep an eye out for small roadside panaderías. They usually bake early and sell out fast, so get there before 10 am if you want the best selection. The sweet cassava rolls are a personal favorite and not something you’ll find easily in tourist spots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about bakeries in Costa Rica? Here are some answers to get you started.

You’ll find lots of goodies like tres leches cake slices, pastelitos filled with guava or pineapple, and sopaipillas , a kind of fried dough dusted with sugar. Don’t miss the gallo pinto empanadas if you want something savory.
Not really. Most close by early afternoon, somewhere around 1 or 2 pm. So plan to go in the morning for the freshest bread and pastries.
It’s still pretty rare to see those options in traditional bakeries here. Some places in San José are starting to experiment, especially in neighborhoods like Escalante, but in smaller towns, it’s mostly classic stuff.
Cash is king in most small bakeries, especially outside the cities. Better to have colones on hand , even a few thousand is enough for a coffee and pastry.
Most people won’t mind if you’re discretely snapping your pastry. Just avoid photographing other customers unless you ask first.
