South Pacific Region

The South Pacific Region of Costa Rica is distinguished by verdant jungle, rushing rivers, sprawling valleys, and towering mountains that drop right into the waters of the Pacific Ocean. Packed with amazing natural attractions in its wondrous waterfalls, primary forest canopy, vibrant vegetation and awe-inspiring wildlife. You could easily exhaust your entire vacation exploring this region and have fun doing it.

Things To Do

Spend a few days in Chirripo National Park and climb Central America's tallest mountain, Cerro Chirripo. Birders will enjoy searching for the elusive Quetzal.

Corcovado National Park is the most biologically intense place on the planet with eco systems that are studied around the world. Imagine Jurassic Park without the dinosaurs and you can begin to imagine the pure awesomeness of this park.  The untouched jungle is home to many endangered species and has miles of pristine beaches.

Pavones is home to the longest and possibly best wave in Costa Rica. If you are a surfer, you have to check it out.  If you are not a surfer, enjoy time on pristine beaches watching others catch the rolling waves known to be the best in the country.

Go scuba diving, whale watching or sport fishing out of Uvita and Bahia Ballena. This area is home to Marino Ballena National Park and the world famous sand spit called the  "Whale's Tail" (Cola Ballena).  The south pacific region enjoys the longest whale watching season in the world.

Nauyaca Waterfall is one of the most impressive in all of  Costa Rica. The two level waterfall drops hundred of feet into a large pool. Horse tours and hiking trails can lead you to this jewel.

Where to stay

The South Pacific Region is still the "wild west" of Costa Rica and does not have the luxury of a large resort but does have every other style of accommodations from high end hotels and rental homes, to budget hotels and hostels.  Our site will help you find the perfect place to stay, close to the natural wonders you want to see.

Getting Around

The South Pacific Region has benefited from many road projects over the last decade. The once grueling 2.5 drive from Quepos to Dominical is now just 30 minutes on the best road in Costa Rica. Further south on the Osa Peninsula, bridges have been built, and  roads graded to make the trip to paradise much easier than in years past.  Rental cars, busses and taxis service the region, but charter flights may be the best option if time is limited.
