Real tips from the Caribbean coast

If you want a real local vibe, head out to Cahuita, especially on market days when food stalls pop up with fresh catch grilled right in front of you. And here’s a secret: avoid the big tourist traps in Puerto Viejo’s main drag and instead find those little 4-table sodas along side streets. One of my favorites is Soda La Nena. Their coconut rice and beans have this slow-cooked sweetness you won’t forget.

Also, try eating early or late, many restaurants slow down around 2 p.m. and pick back up at dinner. If you’re around for breakfast, gallo pinto (rice and beans) with fried plantains and a cup of Costa Rican coffee or freshly squeezed passion fruit juice will fuel your day perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about Caribbean restaurants in Costa Rica? Here’s what I’ve heard and learned.

You can’t go wrong with rondón, a seafood stew cooked in coconut milk with yam and plantain. Also, try the jerk chicken and the fresh seafood, shrimp and snapper are local favorites. Don’t forget to order some plantains cooked sweet or fried, they’re everywhere and delicious.
Most of the good spots are very affordable, especially if you hit local sodas instead of fancy beach restaurants. Expect to pay less than in San José or touristy Pacific coast towns. My favorite roadside soda meals usually go for under $6.
I’d check out Soda La Nena for authentic home-cooked meals or Koki Beach Restaurant if you want seafood right on the sand. For snacks, try the beach shacks near Punta Uva where the locals eat.
It definitely has a kick, but nothing that’ll overwhelm you unless you really go for hot peppers. The spice is well-balanced with coconut milk and fresh herbs, so it’s flavorful and warm without just burning your mouth.
Yeah, while meat and seafood are stars, restaurants usually serve plantain-based dishes, beans, rice, and veggie stews. Just ask, most places are happy to tweak dishes or suggest something meat-free.
For sure! You’ll find local beers like Imperial and cold cocktails. Don’t miss the guaro sour, a local cocktail made with the sugarcane spirit guaro. Some beach spots have great mixed drinks made with fresh fruit.
