Pavones

Pavones is one of the best surf destinations in the world. The wave is arguably the best in Costa Rica, but no one can argue that it is not the longest. The waves can be so perfect, that they seem machine made as they rise out of the Gulf de Dulce and break just off the beach for nearly a mile. The waves wrap around the small town and into a picturesque bay. When the waves are up, people from all over Costa Rica and the world come to face to face with the massive walls of water that pass by the sleepy town. When the surf is small, Pavones is an ideal place for beginners to learn the sport of surfing.

The town has most amenities one needs, but bring cash as there is no ATM in town. One can almost always negotiate better deals if paying cash. Gas can be purchased for $6.00 a gallon (Aug-2011) at the local grocery store that seems to sell items that would normally be seen in grocery stores, hardware stores, and pharmacies.

Hotels, Rental Homes, and hostels dot the shoreline and offer accommodations of every level. The restaurants range from small local eateries to upscale dining.

We love Pavones, and if you surf we are sure you will also. If you do not surf, the town can feel small. Things to do are few and far between unless you want to surf, fish, take a hike or go for a horseback ride down the beach and into the jungle.
