Reviews
Newly built hotel less than a ten minute drive from downtown (do not recommend walking into town from this location). The directions are accurate, but it would be very helpful if there is a sign off of the main road directing your turn. The room was fine - a good size, functional AC and ceiling fan. However, the bathroom had no counter space. Given the size of the bedroom itself, space easily could have been used to make the bathroom more functional. Grounds are well-maintained. However, the lounge area depicted on the website is misleading. There is no food and drink service, and the view is obstructed by utility lines. Breakfast must be chosen the day before. Overall, the staff was nice. However we did have an issue with ants on our first night. In the morning, we asked that the issue to be addressed and our bed sheets to be changed, as there were ants throughout the sheets. When we returned in the afternoon we found that the sheets were not changed even though the room had been serviced. (There was a stain on the fitted sheet the night before and it was still there when we returned). We spoke with Mayco - one of the staff members - and he said that we must be wrong as it was done. After some back and forth he sent over a staff member to finally change them.
A Perfect Slice of Pura Vida in Monteverde From the moment we pulled into Calathea Hotel, we knew we'd made the right choice. Before we even checked in, we were welcomed with genuine smiles and the kind of warm hospitality that perfectly defines Pura Vida. Every member of the staff seemed truly happy to be there, and their kindness never felt forced—it was simply who they are. The property itself is a hidden gem. It's modern, beautifully designed, and surrounded by lush greenery that makes you feel immersed in the cloud forest while still enjoying every modern comfort. Everything was spotless and meticulously maintained. Our room was exactly what we hoped for—comfortable, quiet, and thoughtfully equipped with coffee, tea, a mini fridge, excellent air conditioning, and a bed so comfortable that we slept incredibly well every night. The private balcony was the perfect place to unwind after a day of adventures, listening to nature and breathing in the cool Monteverde air. One thing that often gets overlooked in hotel reviews—but shouldn't—is the shower. After hiking and ziplining all day, coming back to fantastic water pressure and endless hot water was pure luxury. Breakfast deserves its own five stars. Every morning we looked forward to it. The coffee was rich, fresh, and strong enough to get us ready for the day's adventures. The fruit was some of the sweetest and freshest we enjoyed anywhere in Costa Rica, and everything was beautifully prepared and absolutely delicious. The location struck the perfect balance. It's about a 20-minute walk to the center of Santa Elena, making it close enough to enjoy the restaurants and shops while being far enough away to escape the crowds and enjoy complete peace and quiet. And that's perhaps what we'll remember most. At night, we slept like babies. No traffic. No noise. Just the peaceful sounds of the cloud forest. It was one of the most restful sleeps we've had in a long time. If you're looking for a hotel with exceptional hospitality, modern rooms, outstanding breakfasts, and a peaceful setting that truly captures the spirit of Monteverde, look no further. Calathea Hotel exceeded every expectation and was one of the highlights of our Costa Rica vacation. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again.
Monteverde was our second stop in CR after La Fortuna. After a 3 hour drive we were extremely pleased to find the entrance to the hotel to be recently updated and quite modern. The reception is beautiful and the staff extremely kind and helpful. The management speaks English very well but I enjoyed practicing my Spanish also😁. Because we went off season, which I HIGHLY recommend due to the low amount of tourists, we were treated very special at Calathea and upgraded to the best room and our view was beautiful. Now the breakfast, which was included, was unbelievably delicious and we looked forward to it every day! Starts with fresh watermelon juice and a bowl of the most delicious fruit I have ever tasted!! Then you have a choice of egg dishes or yogurt and granola. So,so yummy!Lastly the location was perfect for easy access to delicious sodas and attractions. We never had to drive more than 30 minutes to any area or attraction once we arrived. I truly hope we get to come back someday🥰
The hotel has great service and good location so you can go to Monteverde reserve or any other tour. The breakfast has several options (also for lactose intolerant) just make sure to order it the day before. The room is well equipped with a small kitchen and has a good view for the sunset (Congo room). It is also elderly friendly by having ramps and the showers with no steps. Rooms are clean, air conditioning worked well. Good recommendations and organization of tours at the lobby/counter. Mayco was super helpful sharing all the available tours and options for the groups with the proper reminders and follow ups. Highly recommended.
Great little spot. The hosts were super nice and even knocked on our door to tell us there was a sloth right in the courtyard. Had a great time looking at the views on their patio deck. Totally recommend. The rooms were super clean and updated. They also recommended a restaurant that was a 5 min walk that had killer sunset views. Close to the cloud forest as well. Oh and the breakfast had good portion sizes and was delicious.
