What I wish I knew first

If you’re thinking about hiring a private driver, here’s a quick heads-up: drivers here tend to have a really relaxed vibe, so don’t expect strict timetables like in the states. And honestly, that’s part of the charm. Ask if they’re okay with spontaneous stops by a river or a fruit stand, trust me, it makes the trip more fun.

One of my favorites is ringing up a driver in the Central Valley for a quick day trip to Sarchí, the artesanía capital. It’s less touristy early in the week, and your driver can show you the best lookout points. Just remember, tipping around 10% is appreciated, not mandatory but good karma.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got questions about private drivers? Here are some answers from a local’s perspective.

It depends where you go. Around San José or the Central Valley, prices are reasonable and often cheaper than taxis for long trips. If you’re heading to remote spots like Osa Peninsula, costs go up because of distance and time. But it’s usually worth it for the comfort and local knowledge.
Many do, but it varies. Some drivers just focus on driving, while others love to share tips about nearby attractions or local customs. It never hurts to ask them upfront if they’re cool with stopping at spots off the beaten path or telling stories.
Word of mouth is gold here. Ask locals or your hotel for recommendations. Also, some drivers get booked through apps or agencies, but I prefer personal referrals, they tend to be more reliable and honest.
Usually, they can wait. Many travelers book drivers for full-day trips, which means you can stop when you want without hailing another ride. Just confirm this upfront because some drivers prefer one-way trips.
Most private drivers use relatively new, comfortable cars with A/C, especially in tourist areas. If it’s super hot, A/C is a must here. But in places like Monteverde’s cloud forest, windows down and a breeze can be nice too.
Absolutely. If you’re flying into smaller airports like Tamarindo or Liberia, most private drivers know the schedule and will be there on time. Same goes for beach towns, they’ll happily navigate dirt roads to meet you.
