Description
From July to October, female Atlantic Green Sea Turtles come ashore in Tortuguero at high tide to lay their eggs. This nighttime activity takes place in a natural environment guided by a certified Naturalist Guide who shares detailed knowledge about turtle behavior and conservation.
Previously, tourist crowds disturbed nesting turtles, causing them to return to the ocean without laying eggs. Now, Tortuguero National Park, the Sea Turtle Conservancy, and local tourism operators use professional spotters who locate nesting turtles and communicate their position to guides. Visitors follow a designated trail to observe turtles without causing disruption. You will wait at a specified location until notified of a nesting turtle’s presence.
