Whale and Dolphin Watching Tour in Drake Bay, Costa Rica
This guided tour offers whale and dolphin watching in Drake Bay, suitable for nature lovers and wildlife observers visiting Costa Rica.
Tour Description
The tour starts at 7:30 AM and navigates key areas to spot dolphins, whales, sea turtles, sea birds, and more. Drake Bay is the top location in Costa Rica to observe the migration of humpback whales. The most common species seen are humpback whales and Bryde's whales, which can grow up to 15 meters (50 feet) long. Females are slightly larger than males. Despite their size, these whales often breach, jumping out of the water for a remarkable display. Visitors may also witness mother whales swimming with their calves.
Whale watching seasons in Uvita and Drake Bay occur from mid-July to mid-November and from mid-December to March, based on the humpback whale migration. Southern hemisphere humpbacks travel from Antarctica to Costa Rica between July and October, while northern hemisphere humpbacks migrate from Alaska around December. These whales travel 5000 to 8000 kilometers (3100 to 5000 miles) twice a year.
The tour includes sightings of humpback whales, spotted dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, sea turtles, and sea birds, combined with snorkeling at Whale Tail or Whale Island, where you can see various reef fish. Summer is the best time for snorkeling depending on weather conditions.
Uvita's Bahia Ballena and Drake Bay provide warm, safe waters that attract these cetaceans, making them prime locations for whale watching in Costa Rica.
