North Caribbean Region

The North Caribbean region encompasses the rich coastline from the San Juan River in the north, to the city of Limon in the south. Characterized by amazing river systems full of natures wonders, miles of uncrowded Caribbean beaches and crystal blue waters, the North Caribbean Region is a must see destination for those traveling to Costa Rica.

In Tortuguero, a northern most destination located 140 miles northeast of San Jose,  you will experience dense, humid rainforest that abounds with species of amazing wildlife, birds, reptiles, plants and immense trees. The village of Tortuguer's 22 miles of pristine beaches is home to the worlds second largest nesting of green sea turtles and the most visited nesting sight in the Western Hemisphere. Visiting the Barroa del Colorado Wildlife Refuge can be done from Tortuguero as they offer many types of tours to even the remotest sights.

The climate in the Northern Caribbean has no distinct dry season sometimes experiencing rain from 15 minutes a day to 15 days straight. This has little effect on tourism in the area as the Tourtuguero National Park boasts over 100,000 tourist each year. Ponchos are common attire but do not hinder the adventurous tourist wanting to see this amazing Amazon of Costa Rica.
